Red Flags That Look Like Green Flags at First
Some of the most dangerous patterns in early dating do not look dangerous at all. They look, at first, like devotion. That is precisely what makes them worth naming plainly, because a red flag dressed convincingly as a green one is far more likely to be missed until it has already done its damage.
Intensity too early is one of them. A person who declares deep feelings within days, who speaks of the future with a certainty that has not yet been earned by time, can feel flattering — finally, someone who is sure. But sureness this fast is rarely about you specifically. It is more often about how badly someone wants the feeling of being sure, and that hunger will need feeding again and again, by whoever is nearest, long after you are the one supplying it.
Jealousy dressed as love is another. "I only feel this way because I care so much" is one of the oldest lines used to explain away controlling behavior, and it works because caring and controlling can, in the moment, feel like the same thing from the inside of an anxious heart. Real love tends to loosen its grip as trust grows. Control tightens.
A third is generosity that keeps score. Gifts, favors, and effort that are given freely at first but referenced later — in an argument, as leverage, as evidence of how much they have sacrificed — were never truly given at all. They were loans, and eventually the bill comes due.
A fourth, quieter than the rest, is how someone treats people who cannot do anything for them — a waiter, a driver, a stranger who has been unkind by accident. This one is rarely performed, because most people forget they are being watched in these moments, which is exactly why it tells you more than almost anything they will ever say directly to you.
None of these signs, on their own, are proof of anything. All of them are worth watching for, patiently, before the story has been written too far to easily rewrite.
